The Heart of a Lion

African Lion Statistics (Female/Male):

  • Weight:  250/400 pounds
  • Length:  8/9 feet including average 3-foot tail
  • Height:  30-36 inches
Lions can jump 12 feet high over a distance of 36 feet. They can reach a speed of 30 miles per hour over the short distance of 50 yards (only half a football field).

Lions live in small territorial groups (12-15 members) called prides. There are typically 1-3 males, with the majority of the pride being females and their young. The males mate with the females year-round, and after a gestation period of +/- 110 days, they give birth to a litter of 3-4 cubs who stay with their mothers until a minimum age of two. During this period of cub-rearing, the mothers will not mate again.

The female members of a pride tend to remain together for life, though the males of the pride may be overtaken and replaced by other males. However, when this happens, the young cubs are often killed off as a way to “coerce” the females into mating again with the new male members. Often, the mothers will defend their cubs against intruding males, even unto death.

The females are the hunters. They hunt at night and work together to bring in food for the entire pride. At around one year, the cubs join their mothers in learning the hunt.

Lions have been observed showing communal affection toward one another. The females will even rear the cubs of other females, including nursing them, protecting and teaching them.

My favorite go-to reference book for studying animal symbology is “Animal Speak” by Ted Andrews.  I have added a link for you, if you’d like to get your own copy.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, which means if you use this link (or the ones above) to make a purchase, I will receive a small commission.  Associate links help support my blogging efforts.
