Variations of Reiki

Many different methods of Reiki have been developed since the re-discovery of Reiki by Dr. Mikao Usui.

In the same way that Usui Sensei learned of this form of energy healing, other seekers have meditated upon ways expand their understanding of Reiki.  This includes developing new symbols, new methods of attunements and/or their own method of performing what Usui originally called "reiki".  Some practitioners accept these new systems as Reiki, while others simply acknowledge them as effective methods of EnergyWork.

Reiki is a Japanese word which can literally be translated as "universal life force energy". It is simply a method of natural healing in which the practitioner acts as a conduit for what is commonly referred to as "ki", "chi" or "prana". Some question the validity of different methods of Reiki. To say that Dr. Mikao Usui's method is the only valid form of "reiki" would be a great injustice to other individuals who have walked a similar path. After all, "reiki" is simply another word used to describe the source of energy that is within us all.

Many founders of Reiki variations were first trained in traditional Usui Reiki, and added their own spiritual insights to develop a "new" Reiki system. The Reiki Methods listed below have retained some of the original characteristics of Usui Reiki, with added elements to enhance the overall energetic healing experience.

The differences in methods of Reiki can be found in the symbols, the use of added elements such as sound or meditations, and the underlying issues to be addressed. Some view these additional systems only as higher "levels" of traditional Reiki, and most are only taught to Reiki Masters.

The following is a list of popular variations of Reiki, and how they differ from Dr. Mikao Usui's traditional Reiki.
