Reiki After-Care

What Can I Expect After a Reiki Treatment?

Immediately after your Reiki session, whether receiving over a distance or in person, you should take time to enjoy the deep state of relaxation and to slowly come back to full awareness. You might be too relaxed to drive so allow half an hour to fully awaken from your relaxed state.

Reiki has been noted to trigger a cleansing process, and some individuals have reported that their body goes through a detoxification process after receiving Reiki. This means going to the restroom more frequently, or the release of toxins through the skin. To help the detoxification process, drink lots of water following your treatment, and over the next few days. You may also want to rest more.

Reiki helps to balance the flow of “prana”, “chi” or life-force energy through the body. Awareness can be a vital component in the balancing process. Take note of your thoughts, feelings, behavior, reactions to others, your energy and pain levels, or other issues that arise. You may notice an immediate change in your level of energy, alertness, and overall well-being.

Some long-standing conditions may require repeat Reiki treatments, and may take longer for you to notice significant improvement. While it is possible for an immediate positive response, you should not expect an instantaneous change. Sometimes individuals have reported that symptoms can get worse before getting better. This is thought to be caused by deep-held energetic issues being brought to the surface to be released.

Because the energy within your body is shifting and re-balancing, you may experience additional symptoms.

Additional symptoms of re-balancing and cleansing the body that have been reported, but will soon pass, include:
  • crying for no apparent reason as an emotional release /emotional shifts
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • feeling hot or cold
  • tingling sensations
  • traveling aches or pains throughout body
  • flu-like symptoms

To help facilitate re-balancing, please follow the steps below:
  • drink lots of water to remove any toxins (6-8 glasses/day)
  • eat nutritional foods
  • get plenty of rest
  • avoid toxins, such as caffeine, smoking or alcohol
  • emotional blockages may appear as flu-like symptoms and will soon pass
  • be aware of emotional shifts, spend some time alone if needed
  • be gentle with yourself and avoid strenuous activity for a few days
  • make notes of any experiences you have to share with your Reiki Professional during your next treatment
  • Continue all current medical treatment plans (Reiki is not a substitute for medical or mental health care)

Because of this balancing process, it is essential to drink water to help your body re-adjust. Drinking water also helps the body to remove toxins. Make sure you take time to be gentle with yourself. The side effects listed above are common, and are all positive signs that your body is bringing itself back into balance. The side effects should pass quickly. It is also completely normal to have no side effects at all.

If you experience any of the symptoms listed above for a prolonged period following a Reiki session, it indicate a medical condition that is not related to Reiki. Please consult a Medical Professional if you experience unusual symptoms, or symptoms for a prolonged period of time to rule out an illness that requires medical treatment.
