Remember the Lotus

Whenever you should doubt your self-worth, remember the lotus flower.  Even though it plunges to life from beneath the mud, it does not allow the dirt that surrounds it to affect its growth or beauty.  Suzy Kassem. The lotus flower is considered a sacred symbol.  The Lotus symbolizes purity, beauty, majesty, grace, fertility, knowledge and serenity.  The lotus will fluorish in murky waters, pushing through mud and mire.  The petals break through and reach toward the sun, while the leaves stay afloat as they shine in the light.

Symbolically, lotus petals can be found in the chakra symbols.  Each chakra has a specific number of petals, representing ascending vibrational frequencies.  The state of enlightenment is represented by the thousand-petal lotus.

Am I Really Going to Try Yoga?

Yes, I am!

My doctor recommended it (too long ago) for my back and joint issues.  I've also read that it is beneficial for individuals with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.  Recently it has been recommended yet again by my physical therapist.
Your body is your garden, your will is your gardener.  Shakespeare.

I'd bought a Yoga mat and a few beginner DVD's when my physician first recommended it.  THAT didn't work!  I tried, really I did.  But all I kept thinking was, "There's no way I'm doing this right!"  The DVD was actually excellent:  Rodney Yee's "Yoga for Beginners" by Gaiam.  When I first tried the DVD, I was still (quite) overweight and working on my mobility issues (excuses, excuses).  I also lacked the discipline that I
think I have now.

So I went with the recommendation from my physical therapist and signed up for "No Excuses!  Yoga for True Beginners" at a local Yoga studio.  The course starts next month (not an excuse, I promise).  I pre-paid so there's no backing out now!

The benefits of Yoga include:
  • mental health (anxiety, depression, stress)
  • physical health (heart disease, digestion, etc.)
  • sleep and relaxation
  • flexibility and balance
  • increased energy levels
  • increased inner peace
It's a total mind, body, spirit thing!  And I believe it will help with the health issues I have, as well as deepening my meditations and spirituality.  I'll be sharing my experiences (good or not-so-good) with you starting in January 2014.

Wish me luck!
